
India extends support for key projects under Bhutan’s 13th Five Year Plan during high-level meeting in Thimphu.
The 17th Monthly Coordination Meeting between the Embassy of India, Thimphu and the Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB) was held in Thimphu to review cooperation under Bhutan’s 13th Five Year Plan. The meeting was co-chaired by the Deputy Chief of Mission of India and the Director General of the Department of Macro-Fiscal and Development Finance under Bhutan’s Ministry of Finance. Officials from various ministries and agencies of both sides participated.
During the meeting, the Deputy Chief of Mission handed over cheques amounting to INR/Nu. 423 million (42.3 crores) to Bhutan’s Ministry of Finance. The funds are aimed at supporting key development projects under the 13th Five Year Plan.
A major portion, INR/Nu. 168.6 million, was allocated for infrastructure development for the Zhung Dratshang (Central Monastic Body). This project focuses on improving living and learning conditions, preserving cultural and spiritual traditions, and ensuring the wellbeing of monks and nuns.
Another INR/Nu. 150.1 million was released for the construction of the Khuru-Kuenphen bridge on the Bajo-Khuru State National Highway. The modern bridge, which was inaugurated on March 27, 2026, is expected to improve connectivity and transport infrastructure.
Additionally, INR/Nu. 54.4 million was allocated for the improvement of the Yongkola-Lingmethang Primary National Highway. The project involves upgrading a 17-kilometre stretch to enhance traffic movement, reduce travel time, and lower transportation costs.
An amount of INR/Nu. 49.9 million was also released for the development of infrastructure at the Royal Institute of Management. This includes renovation of hostels, procurement of library and IT resources, and strengthening academic linkages with Indian institutions.
Both sides also reviewed the progress of ongoing initiatives, including Human Resource Development and Skilling Programmes led by Bhutan’s Ministry of Education and Skills Development, as well as activities under the Economic Stimulus Programme.
The meeting highlighted the continued strong partnership between India and Bhutan, with a shared focus on development, capacity building, and economic growth.
