
India and Sweden elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership during bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Gothenburg.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi held bilateral consultations with Prime Minister of Sweden H.E. Mr. Ulf Kristersson in Gothenburg. Her Royal Highness Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden also participated in the meeting and conveyed greetings from Their Majesties King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi extended warm wishes to His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
During the discussions, the two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of India-Sweden relations and welcomed growing cooperation in trade and investment, innovation, green transition, emerging technologies, defence and security, digitalisation, SMEs, space, research, education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties based on democratic values, innovation, sustainability, and strong research and development cooperation. They also emphasized the importance of regular high-level political engagement and institutional dialogue to further deepen the partnership.
A major outcome of the meeting was the decision to elevate India-Sweden ties to the level of a Strategic Partnership. The new Strategic Partnership will focus on four key pillars:
- Strategic Dialogue for Stability and Security
- Next-Generation Economic Partnership
- Emerging Technologies and Trusted Connectivity
- Shaping Tomorrow Together – People, Planet, Health and Resilience
To operationalise the Strategic Partnership, the leaders adopted the India-Sweden Joint Action Plan 2026-2030, which outlines a roadmap for cooperation across political, economic, technological, climate, security, and people-centric sectors.
The leaders also noted that the recently concluded India-European Union Free Trade Agreement has opened a new chapter in economic and commercial cooperation. They agreed to continue efforts for its early implementation to strengthen trade, investment, and technology partnerships.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi appreciated Sweden’s continued collaboration with India in innovation, clean technology, sustainable mobility, advanced manufacturing, and digital transformation. Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Ulf Kristersson praised India’s achievements in digital transformation and artificial intelligence and acknowledged the positive contribution of the Indian community in Sweden.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi invited greater Swedish participation in India’s growth and development journey.
The leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments and highlighted the urgent need for reforms in the United Nations and other multilateral organisations. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi thanked Sweden for its support in the global fight against terrorism.
