India reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening transparency, credibility and consumer confidence in the global natural diamond sector as the Kimberley Process Intersessional Meeting 2026 concluded in Mumbai after four days of discussions.
The Kimberley Process (KP) Intersessional Meeting 2026 concluded in Mumbai under India’s Chairship, bringing together representatives from participating countries, industry leaders, civil society organisations and observers to discuss the future of the natural diamond trade.
Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal said India remains firmly committed to advancing the principles of Credibility, Compliance and Consumer Confidence, referred to as the “3Cs,” during its Chairship of the Kimberley Process in 2026.
Shri Goyal stated that India, as the world’s leading centre for diamond cutting and polishing, recognises the critical role of the Kimberley Process in ensuring that natural diamonds continue to represent trust, responsibility and shared prosperity across global markets.
He said the natural diamond sector supports millions of livelihoods across producing, processing and consuming nations. According to the Minister, India will continue to support a Kimberley Process framework that is transparent, strong and responsive to changing industry trends and consumer expectations.
The four-day meeting focused on strengthening transparency, governance and operational reforms within the global natural diamond trade. Working groups and committees held detailed discussions on monitoring systems, governance mechanisms, technical processes, statistics and artisanal diamond production.
KP Chair 2026 Suchindra Misra said the progress made during the Mumbai Intersessional reflected the collective commitment of participants and observers toward maintaining the Kimberley Process as a credible and relevant global mechanism.
He emphasized that trust remains the foundation of the natural diamond industry and highlighted the importance of reinforcing responsible sourcing, transparency and consumer confidence throughout the diamond value chain.
The meeting also stressed the need for stronger communication and outreach efforts to better inform consumers about the positive impact of the Kimberley Process, including responsible sourcing practices, livelihood support and developmental benefits in diamond-producing communities.
Discussions and recommendations from the Mumbai Intersessional will continue during the Kimberley Process Plenary meeting scheduled to be held in New Delhi later this year.
The event witnessed participation from Kimberley Process member countries, the World Diamond Council, Civil Society Coalition members and various industry stakeholders.
Established under the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 55/56, the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme aims to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the legitimate global diamond trade while promoting responsible sourcing practices.
India reiterated its commitment to promoting sustainability, transparency and responsible trade practices in the natural diamond sector during its leadership of the Kimberley Process in 2026.
