Government e Marketplace (GeM) is celebrating its Incorporation Day 2026, highlighting its growing role in transforming public procurement in India through transparency, digital governance and support for domestic enterprises.
The Government e Marketplace is observing its Incorporation Day 2026, marking nine years since the incorporation of the GeM Special Purpose Vehicle under the Ministry of Commerce on May 17, 2017.
Established as a Section 8 non-profit company under the Companies Act, 2013, GeM was created to develop, manage and maintain a transparent and technology-driven digital procurement platform for government departments and agencies across India.
Over the years, GeM has emerged as one of India’s major digital public procurement platforms, supporting ease of doing business and providing wider market access for sellers and service providers across the country.
Aligned with the Government’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Vocal for Local and Viksit Bharat 2047, the platform continues to promote domestic enterprises by connecting local manufacturers and suppliers with government procurement opportunities.
The platform currently hosts more than 1.36 lakh government buyers and nearly 25 lakh sellers and service providers. Around 72 percent of active sellers on the platform are Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs).
During the financial year 2025–26, over 11 lakh MSEs registered on GeM received more than 51 lakh procurement orders worth ₹2.36 lakh crore. Women-led MSEs secured orders worth over ₹28,000 crore, while SC/ST entrepreneurs received procurement orders exceeding ₹6,000 crore. Startups registered on the platform received orders worth more than ₹19,000 crore, highlighting GeM’s growing contribution towards entrepreneurship and inclusive economic participation.
Chief Executive Officer of GeM, Mihir Kumar said the platform was created with the vision of building a transparent, efficient and inclusive digital procurement ecosystem for government agencies. He added that GeM continues to support Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Vocal for Local by linking domestic enterprises with procurement opportunities.
As part of the Incorporation Day celebrations, GeM is organising several stakeholder engagement and knowledge-sharing initiatives. The celebrations began with the GeM Vendor Assessment Workshop held on May 15, 2026, aimed at improving awareness about vendor assessment procedures and documentation requirements for prospective Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).
GeM will also organise “GeM Manthan” on May 21, 2026 under the theme “Enriching the GeM Marketplace” to discuss ways to strengthen the GeM ecosystem. In addition, a brainstorming session with representatives from the Defence Services is scheduled for May 22, 2026 to deliberate on process improvements and technology interventions for defence procurement requirements.
The continued expansion of GeM reflects the Government’s push towards digital governance, transparency and inclusive participation in India’s public procurement system.
