
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was conferred the prestigious Agricola Medal 2026 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in recognition of his leadership in food security, sustainable agriculture, and rural development.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi received the prestigious Agricola Medal for 2026 from the Food and Agriculture Organization at its headquarters in Rome. The honour was presented by FAO Director-General Dr. Qu Dongyu in recognition of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s exceptional leadership in advancing food security, sustainable agriculture, and rural development both in India and globally.
Accepting the award, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi dedicated the honour to India’s farmers and agricultural scientific community, acknowledging their contribution towards ensuring food security and nutrition for India and the world. He said the recognition reflected India’s commitment to human welfare, sustainable development, and global food security.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi emphasized that agriculture in India is deeply connected with culture and society and described it as a sacred relationship between Mother Earth and the people of India. He highlighted India’s scientific and innovation-driven approach to farming, stating that the country is building a sustainable, climate-resilient, and future-ready agricultural ecosystem.
The Prime Minister noted that initiatives such as “Per Drop More Crop,” micro-irrigation, precision farming, Digital Public Infrastructure, AI-based advisory systems, drones, remote sensing technologies, and sensor-based machinery are helping Indian farmers improve productivity and increase incomes. He also highlighted that India has developed around 3,000 climate-resilient crop varieties over the last decade.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi said India’s science-driven agriculture is contributing to global food security, particularly for countries of the Global South. He also recalled India’s long-standing partnership with FAO and thanked the organization for supporting India’s efforts to promote healthy food choices through the International Year of Millets.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s visit to the FAO Headquarters marked the first visit by an Indian Head of Government to the organization in the last 30 years.
