
Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined the people and Royal Family of Bhutan in Thimphu to mark the 70th birth anniversary of His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Fourth King of Bhutan, reaffirming the deep India-Bhutan friendship.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi participated in a special event at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu, Bhutan, celebrating the 70th birth anniversary of His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Fourth King of Bhutan. The event was attended by the King of Bhutan, members of the Royal Family, senior government officials, and citizens from across the country.

The celebration began with a collective prayer led by His Majesty the King of Bhutan, in remembrance of the victims of the recent Delhi blast. Prime Minister Modi, addressing the gathering, extended warm wishes on behalf of the people of India to His Majesty the Fourth King and to the people of Bhutan.

In his address, Prime Minister Modi praised the transformative leadership of His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, under whose reign Bhutan transitioned into a constitutional democratic monarchy and introduced the globally admired philosophy of Gross National Happiness—integrating economic progress with environmental sustainability and well-being.
Prime Minister Modi also expressed gratitude for the Fourth King’s personal contribution to strengthening the unique India-Bhutan partnership. He said that His Majesty’s vision and wisdom continue to inspire the close cooperation between the two nations across multiple sectors.
Highlighting Bhutan’s progress under the guidance of the current King, His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Prime Minister Modi commended the country’s achievements in sustainable development, hydropower generation, and environmental conservation. He noted Bhutan’s distinction as the world’s first carbon-negative nation and acknowledged the shared efforts in renewable energy and connectivity projects, including new hydropower and rail link initiatives.
During his speech, the Prime Minister also announced India’s support for the development of Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City, as well as plans to establish a new immigration checkpoint to facilitate visitors and investors. He further emphasized enhanced cooperation in education, youth innovation, digital payments, and cultural exchanges, mentioning India’s continued assistance of ₹10,000 crore for Bhutan’s ongoing Five-Year Plan.
Prime Minister Modi concluded by reaffirming India’s commitment to deepening its cultural, economic, and spiritual ties with Bhutan, invoking the blessings of Lord Buddha and Guru Rinpoche for peace, prosperity, and shared progress between the two nations.
