Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited and Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited enter a strategic partnership to design and build advanced Landing Platform Docks under the Indian Navy’s modernisation drive.
Mumbai, October 28, 2025: During the flagship India Maritime Week 2025 (IMW 2025) held in Mumbai, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), India’s premier defence shipyard and a Navratna company under the Ministry of Defence, signed an exclusive Teaming Agreement (TA) with Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI), India’s largest shipbuilding and heavy fabrication company, for collaboration in the design and construction of Landing Platform Docks (LPDs) for the Indian Navy.
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) recently approved the acquisition of LPDs — a critical capability enhancement for the Indian Navy to support power projection, amphibious operations, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) missions.
Under this Teaming Agreement, MDL will contribute its extensive expertise in ship design, project management, and system integration, while Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI) will provide its state-of-the-art shipbuilding infrastructure — the largest in the country — for the construction of these advanced vessels. The partnership is structured to leverage the technical, operational, and financial strengths of both organisations to deliver an optimal solution to the Indian Navy.
This collaboration embodies the Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model envisioned by the Government of India. By integrating the efficiency and agility of the private sector with the proven capability and quality standards of a leading public sector enterprise, the initiative aims to reduce build periods, improve quality, and ensure cost efficiency in the construction of complex naval platforms.
Mr. Vivek Merchant, Director, Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI), said,
“We are proud to partner with MDL for this prestigious programme. Together, we aim to deliver technologically advanced, globally competitive platforms that will strengthen the Indian Navy’s blue-water capabilities. This Teaming Agreement reinforces our commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat and to positioning India as a global hub for shipbuilding and maritime innovation.”
Capt. Jagmohan, Chairman and Managing Director, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), added,
“This partnership marks a significant milestone in India’s shipbuilding journey. The LPDs are essential to the nation’s maritime power projection capability, and through this collaboration, we aim to deliver world-class ships built in India, for India. By combining MDL’s design and integration expertise with SDHI’s modern infrastructure, we are confident of setting new benchmarks in quality, efficiency, and delivery — a true example of public–private synergy in the defence sector.”
