Veteran politician and former Governor, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, assumes the second-highest constitutional office.
Shri Chandrapuram Ponnusami (C.P.) Radhakrishnan was sworn in today as the 15th Vice President of India and, by virtue of the office, the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
Shri Radhakrishnan, born on May 4, 1957, in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, brings with him over four decades of political and public service experience. Before his election to the Vice Presidency, he served as the Governor of Maharashtra, and earlier as the Governor of Jharkhand, also holding additional charges as the Governor of Telangana and the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.
A seasoned parliamentarian, Shri Radhakrishnan was elected twice to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore in 1998 and 1999. He chaired the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Textiles and was a member of key parliamentary panels, including those on Public Sector Undertakings and Finance. He also addressed the UN General Assembly in 2004 and was part of the first parliamentary delegation to Taiwan.

In his political journey, Shri Radhakrishnan also served as the President of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit between 2004–2007, where he led a 19,000 km-long ‘Ratha Yatra’ focusing on national issues like river linking, terrorism, and social reforms. He later chaired the Coir Board in Kochi (2016–2020), during which India’s coir exports reached record levels.
As Governor of Maharashtra, he actively promoted higher education, tribal welfare, and social outreach programs, including the ‘School Connect’ initiative to encourage tribal students into higher studies.
A graduate in Business Administration, Shri Radhakrishnan began his career as a successful garment exporter before entering politics. An avid sportsman, he excelled in table tennis, athletics, cricket, and volleyball during his college days.
Well-traveled, he has represented India across several countries including the USA, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, and many others.
With his vast administrative experience, political acumen, and people-centric approach, Shri Radhakrishnan takes charge of the Vice Presidency at a crucial time, with expectations of strengthening India’s parliamentary traditions and democratic discourse.
