The German Foreign Minister’s first official visit to India focused on trade, technology, education, and global cooperation.
H.E. Mr. Johann Wadephul, Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany, paid an official visit to India from September 1 to 3, 2025. This marked his first visit to the country in his capacity as Germany’s Foreign Minister.

During the visit, Mr. Wadephul called on Prime Minister of India and held delegation-level talks with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar in New Delhi on September 3. He also met with Shri Piyush Goyal, Commerce & Industry Minister. The Foreign Minister was accompanied by a high-level business delegation, underlining the growing economic partnership between India and Germany.

Both sides reviewed their wide-ranging Strategic Partnership and expressed satisfaction at progress in areas such as trade and investment, defence and security, science, technology, green development, and education. They also agreed to introduce gratis visas for short-term school and college visits to strengthen student exchanges.
India and Germany agreed to set up a new bilateral consultation mechanism on the Indo-Pacific. India expressed appreciation for Germany’s strong support in the fight against terrorism.
The visit began in Bengaluru on September 2, where Mr. Wadephul met with German companies operating in India and visited technology and innovation hubs. He also engaged with leading Indian institutions such as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Discussions highlighted opportunities in green technology, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, space cooperation, and sustainable urban development.
This visit holds special importance as India and Germany celebrate 25 years of their Strategic Partnership, founded on trust, democratic values, and a shared vision for global stability and sustainable development.
