Government working in mission mode to build a culture of quality and sustainability; global standards key to trade and innovation
Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, and Textiles Shri Piyush Goyal has said that sustainability is non-negotiable in India’s growth journey. He was speaking at the inauguration of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) General Meeting Exhibition organized by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) today.
Shri Goyal underlined that India’s cultural ethos is rooted in harmony with nature, and the nation is pursuing sustainability not out of compulsion, but out of conviction as a responsible global citizen. He highlighted India’s commitment to its Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement, as well as enhanced goals announced at various COP meetings, stressing that India firmly believes in the principles of the circular economy, waste reduction, and resource conservation.
Global Standards and Trade
The Minister emphasised that harmonizing international standards is critical to enhancing quality, ensuring consumer welfare, and expanding free trade. He said that strong standards not only raise the quality of products but also promote market access, global collaboration, and investment opportunities.
Welcoming the participation of international experts at the IEC General Meeting, Shri Goyal expressed confidence that the deliberations would enrich the global dialogue on high-quality standards. He said such cooperation is vital for countries to move towards open markets, free and fair trade, and a level playing field for businesses worldwide.
Quality as a Strategic Lever
Shri Goyal noted that standards are not cost-raising, but rather cost-reducing, as they improve efficiency, minimize wastage, and enhance consumer safety. Citing the example of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) for toys, he explained how enforcing strict standards eliminated substandard imports, encouraged quality domestic manufacturing, and ensured children’s safety.
He recalled that India’s heritage of consumer protection and quality consciousness goes back to Chanakya’s Arthashastra (4th century BC), which mandated fair weights and measures and penalties for adulteration.
Vision of “Zero Defect, Zero Effect”
Reaffirming Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of “Zero Defect, Zero Effect”, Shri Goyal said the government is working in mission mode to embed quality and sustainability across sectors. This vision ensures products of world-class quality (zero defect) while keeping environmental impact minimal (zero effect). He said this is building India’s reputation as a hub for products that are “Designed in India, Made in India,” trusted globally for reliability, sustainability, and excellence.
Role of Electrical & Electronic Industry
Shri Goyal highlighted the crucial role of the electrical and electronic industry in driving energy efficiency and sustainability. As India transitions towards advanced electronic solutions, the sector will help reduce energy use, cut pollution, and boost climate action, while providing high-quality products to consumers.
Call for Global Cooperation
Concluding his address, Shri Piyush Goyal urged the global community to work together in creating a standardized, safe, and sustainable future. He said that harmonized global standards are the foundation for growth, consumer protection, and safeguarding the planet for future generations.
