Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Mr. Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. The two leaders welcomed the steady progress in relations since their last meeting in Kazan in October 2024 and agreed that India and China should be partners in development, not rivals.

PM Modi emphasized that peace and tranquility along the India–China border were essential for the growth of bilateral ties. Both leaders expressed satisfaction at the successful disengagement last year and the continued stability along the border areas. They reiterated their commitment to a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary issue, noting the progress made by their Special Representatives in recent talks.
The leaders also highlighted the need to expand people-to-people exchanges, including through direct flights, visa facilitation, and the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. On trade and economic cooperation, they underlined the importance of their two economies in stabilizing global trade and agreed on the need to reduce trade imbalances while expanding investment ties.

PM Modi noted that both countries pursue strategic autonomy and stressed that their relations should not be viewed through the lens of any third country. The leaders also agreed to increase cooperation on global challenges such as terrorism and fair trade at multilateral platforms.
Prime Minister Modi expressed support for China’s SCO Presidency and invited President Xi to attend the BRICS Summit in India in 2026. President Xi thanked him for the invitation and pledged China’s support for India’s BRICS Presidency.
On the sidelines, PM Modi also met Mr. Cai Qi, Member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China, and shared his vision for bilateral relations. Mr. Cai reaffirmed China’s desire to expand exchanges in line with the consensus between the two leaders.
