
From healthcare and education to energy and maritime security, both nations announced major initiatives reflecting their deep cultural and strategic bonds.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a press statement in Varanasi on September 21, 2025, during the joint media interaction with Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam of Mauritius.
Welcoming the Mauritian leader to his parliamentary constituency, Prime Minister Modi described the visit as a “spiritual union,” noting the centuries-old cultural ties between India and Mauritius. He said the two countries are “not just partners but a family.”
Highlighting Mauritius’ place in India’s Neighbourhood First policy and its MAHASAGAR vision, the Prime Minister said the two sides had elevated ties to an “Enhanced Strategic Partnership” during his visit to Mauritius in March 2025.
Key Announcements:
- A Special Economic Package to support Mauritius’ infrastructure, healthcare, and employment priorities.
- The first Jan Aushadhi Kendra outside India inaugurated in Mauritius, with further support for an AYUSH Centre of Excellence, a 500-bed Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital, and a Veterinary School and Animal Hospital.
- Major projects including the Chagos Marine Protected Area, ATC Tower at SSR International Airport, and highway expansion.
- Plans to enable trade in local currencies following the success of UPI and RuPay cards in Mauritius.
- Delivery of 100 electric buses to aid Mauritius’ energy transition, alongside a 17.5 MW floating solar power plant at Tamarind Falls.
- Launch of a new Directorate of Science and Technology in Mauritius and training modules under Mission Karmayogi.
- Academic collaborations between the University of Mauritius and India’s IIT Madras and Indian Institute of Plantation Management.
On security cooperation, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s role as the “first responder and net security provider in the Indian Ocean.” He announced an agreement on hydrography cooperation, joint surveys of Mauritius’ Exclusive Economic Zone, and ongoing training for 120 Mauritian Coast Guard officers in India.
Congratulating Mauritius on the conclusion of the Chagos Agreement, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s long-standing support for decolonization and Mauritius’ sovereignty.
Marking the 125th birth anniversary of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the Prime Minister said the statesman’s legacy will continue to guide the enduring partnership between the two nations.
