At the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid an official visit to Malaysia from 7 to 8 February 2026.
Prime Minister Modi was accorded an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex in Putrajaya. On 8 February 2026, the two leaders held bilateral talks and reaffirmed the India–Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which was elevated in August 2024.
The discussions covered a wide range of areas including political cooperation, defence and security, maritime cooperation, trade and investment, digital economy, science and technology, energy, agriculture, healthcare, education, culture, tourism, and people-to-people ties. Regional and global issues of mutual interest were also discussed. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim hosted an official luncheon in honour of Prime Minister Modi, and both leaders witnessed the exchange of several bilateral agreements and documents.
The leaders highlighted the deep historical and cultural links between the two countries, including centuries-old civilizational connections and the important contribution of the Indian community in Malaysia. They agreed that these ties form a strong foundation for future cooperation.
On trade and investment, both sides welcomed growing bilateral trade and investments. They stressed the importance of the Malaysia–India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement and the ASEAN–India Trade in Goods Agreement. The leaders encouraged cooperation in key sectors such as semiconductors, renewable energy, digital economy, fintech, artificial intelligence, healthcare, infrastructure, and green technologies.
In digital and financial cooperation, the leaders welcomed the formalisation of the Malaysia–India Digital Council and the partnership between NPCI International Limited and PayNet Malaysia to link digital payment systems. This move is expected to support businesses, tourists, students, and remittances.
In defence and security, both leaders strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms and agreed on zero tolerance. They welcomed ongoing defence exercises, maritime cooperation, and joint efforts in counter-terrorism, including within ASEAN-led mechanisms and the United Nations.
The leaders also agreed to deepen cooperation in education, skill development, healthcare, traditional medicine, disaster management, sustainable development, and biodiversity conservation. Tourism and air connectivity were identified as key drivers of people-to-people relations, with both sides supporting increased travel and visa facilitation.
At the regional and multilateral level, Malaysia welcomed India’s BRICS Chairmanship in 2026, while India appreciated Malaysia’s support for India’s permanent membership in a reformed UN Security Council. Both sides reaffirmed support for ASEAN centrality, a free and open Indo-Pacific, and peaceful resolution of disputes under international law.
Prime Minister Modi thanked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the people of Malaysia for their warm hospitality and invited the Malaysian Prime Minister to visit India in the near future.
