Speaking in New York on September 23, 2025, Dr. S. Jaishankar urged like-minded Global South countries to unite for fairer economic practices, stronger multilateralism, and urgent reforms.
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar addressed the High-Level Meeting of Like-Minded Global South Countries in New York on September 23, 2025. In his speech, he highlighted the growing challenges faced by developing nations and stressed the importance of solidarity and reform in global affairs.
Dr. Jaishankar noted that the Global South continues to face severe shocks, including the Covid pandemic, conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, extreme climate events, and disruptions in trade and investment. He added that the international system, built over decades, is now under pressure, with multilateral institutions losing effectiveness due to lack of reforms and resources.
The minister emphasized that developing countries need to work together on several principles, such as ensuring fair and transparent economic practices, building resilient supply chains, protecting global commons, and leveraging technology for development. He also underlined the urgency of resolving conflicts that threaten food, fertilizer, and energy security.
India, he said, proposes five steps for the Global South:
- Strengthen consultations within existing forums.
- Share unique strengths and achievements, such as in vaccines, digital platforms, education, agriculture, and SMEs.
- Develop climate initiatives that serve the Global South.
- Explore new technologies, including artificial intelligence.
- Push for reforms in the United Nations and multilateral systems.
Dr. Jaishankar concluded by expressing India’s commitment to supporting the Global South and called on member countries to stand united during these uncertain times.
