India’s External Affairs Minister outlined priorities for BRICS, stressing peace, UN reforms, trade stability, and cooperation in technology and innovation.
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar hosted a meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers in New York on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80).
In his opening remarks, Dr. Jaishankar underlined the vital role of BRICS in today’s global order. He noted that at a time when multilateralism is under stress, BRICS continues to stand firm as a strong voice of reason and constructive change.
The minister emphasized that in a turbulent world, BRICS must reinforce peacebuilding through dialogue, diplomacy, and respect for international law. He also reiterated the bloc’s collective call for comprehensive reforms of the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, to ensure fairer global representation.
Dr. Jaishankar drew attention to the challenges of rising protectionism, tariff volatility, and non-tariff barriers that are impacting global trade. He urged BRICS nations to defend the multilateral trading system.
Looking ahead, he stressed that technology and innovation will shape the next phase of BRICS cooperation. As India assumes the Chairship, its focus will be on food and energy security, climate change, and sustainable development, advancing these goals through digital transformation, startups, innovation, and strengthened development partnerships.
The meeting reaffirmed BRICS’ role as a key platform for advancing equitable growth, reforming global institutions, and addressing emerging challenges collectively.
